The department of anesthesiology has over 30 doctors including 15 consultants, and 35 technicians who together manage 9 fully equipped state -of- art operating theatres, 4 cardiac catheter labs, 32 postoperative recovery room beds, emergency and road and air ambulance services at the Fortis Escorts Heart Institute besides providing expert services to other satellite centers like Faridabad, Jodhpur, Gwalior, Allahabad and Raipur. Equipped with the latest and best monitoring and life support systems, all operating rooms have the facilities to carry out trans-esophageal echocardiography for real time assessment of anatomic and functional status of the heart while the surgery is in progress.
The department of anesthesiology has successfully managed wide range of complicated cardiac and non-cardiac surgical cases, in patients few hours old newborns to nonagenarians, with equal ease and competence by a team of experienced and dedicated anesthesiologists. All patients scheduled for surgery or interventions to be monitored by anesthesiologists, are visited by anesthesiologists prior to the procedure for complete assessment and planning. In addition, the pre-anesthetic sessions are meant to answer queries that patients may have, and patients are also encouraged to participate in planning out the techniques that would best suit them. The department is academically very active, and is recognized center for post-doctoral fellowship programme in the field of cardiac anesthesiology under National Board of Examinations. The department has also started its own fellowship programme in cardiac anesthesiology. Two of the faculty members (Dr Karlekar and Dr Dhole) are recognized teachers by the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine for training fellows in critical care medicine.
